Art In The Stacks: Old Stones

From March until August 2024, we will be featuring the artwork of Regent graduate Stephanie Martens in an exhibit entitled "Old Stones."
Artist Statement
While studying at Regent College, Stephanie was profoundly influenced by her exploration of scripture, theology, and church history. Delving into the writings of mystics, church fathers, and the evolution of the evangelical movement, she found solace and guidance in the wisdom of those who had walked the path of faith before her.
As a graphic designer, Stephanie grappled with the challenge of using the medium of graphic design within the realm of ministry. Despite her love for the craft, she recognized its susceptibility to manipulation and commercialization of messages. Through her venture, Old Stones artwork, Stephanie embarked on a journey to infuse the modern medium with spiritual energy. She questioned whether graphic art could convey the sacred or at least direct attention towards the pursuit of goodness, truth, and beauty.
In the pursuit of this vision, Stephanie seeks to polish old stones by graphically interpreting words and concepts from the Christian heritage. Her aim is to not only nurture her own faith but also to inspire faith in others through art that encourages contemplation and reflection.
Artist Bio
Stephanie has a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Winnipeg, a graphic design diploma from Holland College in Prince Edward Island, and an MATS from Regent College with a concentration in Christianity and the Arts. She has worked as a graphic designer for over 17 years, both in church settings and in the broader graphic design industry. More recently she has pursued a painting certificate at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
Stephanie has devoted much energy over the years to producing work of integrity for the church, with a deep desire to inject honest, hopeful, and beautiful art into the world through the creativity and thoughtfulness that comes from a variety of backgrounds such as art history, graphic design, and theological education.
